With news broadcasts dominated by election coverage, the Edwards scandal and Russian Invasion of Georgia, the news has been slow to spread that Warner Brothers announced yesterday that they were postponing the November Release of Harry Potter: Half-Blood Prince until July of 2009. If you hadn't previously heard the news then I apologize for being the one to break it to you.
In the immediate wake following Warner Brothers announcement, Internet rumors spread attributing the delayed release to the Writer's Guild Strike this past spring. However, upon further clarification by Warner Brothers it now seems that the movie is completed and that the delay was an arbitrary decision made be Warner Brothers Executives. In a press release issued by WB they announced that the Writer's Guild strike this past spring had caused delays in blockbusters previously scheduled for release during the Summer of 2009. As executives faced a likely drop in revenues next year accompanied by the overwhelming success of The Dark Knight this summer, they made the decision to spread out their revenues by delaying the November Potter release. As a result it is now clear that a lack of Executive planning accompanied by the Writers Guild Strike have caused the delay.
As news spreads that the unnecessary delay was caused by Warner Brothers Executive, tens of thousands of Potter Fans are flocking to websites such as Mugglenet to express their sorrow-turned-outrage. At some point yesterday an angry or upset Potter fan made the decision to start an online petition to send a message of condemnation to Warner Brothers Executives. The Petition can be found here: Harry Potter 6 Petition.
As a Harry Potter fan I am personally outraged that WB Executives would make this decision. In a LA Times article published earlier today, Warner Brothers President Alan Horn, stated, "Warner currently is riding high with "The Dark Knight," the Batman film that also stars Bale. The grim super-hero movie has taken in $452 million in the U.S. since its July 18 release, making it the second-highest grossing film ever. To some degree, that success motivated Warner to shift ."
On a personal note, what a low-life piece of *$@^. I have 2 children who, tomorrow morning, I will crush when the only movie they have looked forward to this fall has been cancelled because WB executives utterly failed to better plan their release schedule. Ultimately what these executives fear is that increased revenues driven by the Potter and Dark Knight release this year would lead to shareholder outrage when revenues fall next year. These few executives are doing nothing more than covering their own asses at the expense of the very fans who have handed them their success.
What a shame!
