In an article last week in which we announced the news that Jerome Corsi's The Obama Nation would top the New York Times Bestseller list, I also commented on my shock that the Obama campaign and his surrogates had not released a barrage of criticism and attacks against the book. Unfortunately for the Obama campaign it appears that their late attacks on The Obama Nation may produce results that they never intended.
Since The Obama Nation release, it's overall rank on Amazon.com and other online retailers had steadily slipped from it's best position as #2 in overall sales (#1 in Non-fiction) to #9 at the start of this week. Yet, yesterday Senator John Kerry sparked a storm of criticism over the book when he equated the book to Corsi's unexpected 2004 best seller, Unfit for Command. The attack by Kerry and subsequent attacks by the Obama Campaign, their surrogates and Obama-infatuated media appears to have had a negative effect. Today, online sales of The Obama Nation surged on the news of the criticism driving sales on Amazon.com back to the #2 overall rank. Prior to Kerry's remarks the silence strategy may have been the best strategy for the Obama Campaign to take, after all, buzz around the book was diminishing within the mainstream media and the online blogging community. Yet, Kerry's remarks have re-established interest in the book, making The Obama Nation a top search on Google, and expanded that interest to a new round of voters who previously never would have purchased The Obama Nation.
The Obama campaign cannot be happy with the firestorm that Kerry has created, but I'm sure that Mr. Corsi enjoys the extra attention. On the same note, I can also imagine that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are wishing for a little bit of "Kerry Love" this evening. According to BookScan as of the end of last week Pelosi and Reid's book sales have reached the monumental milestone of a combined 6,500 books.
Pelosi who has spent her time since adjourning congress on a $35 per person book signing tour, has managed to sell only 4,480 books in the past month. Pelosi's power rank on Amazon has dropped to an abysmal 2,798. On the other side of Capital Hill Senator Reid's book, The Good Fight, which was released nearly three months ago has sold slightly over 2,000 copies. Perhaps Reid and Pelosi should encourage John Kerry to launch a public attack against them so that they may cover their advance.
