Obama Donor Base Shrivels, Campaign Blows $35 Million, Obama Bloggers Reporting False Numbers

This morning the papers were overloaded with positive stories proclaiming that Barack Obama was back on his A-Game and raising money like there was no tomorrow. Unfortunately the MSM once again failed to look at the actual numbers that should be of concern for the Obama campaign.

It is true that the Obama campaign did raise $52 million in June, along with DNC fundraising that added another $22 million to their coffers. That's a total haul of $74 million for the Democrat party in the month of June. But Obama, whose campaign has been so proud to taught his 1.5 million donors during the months of February, March & April, changed it's tone in yesterday's campaign release. In yesterday's release, David Plouffe stated, "Hundreds of thousands of ordinary people contributed...". Naturally, I pulled out the calculator only to grin at the reality that Obama, while raising a record $52 million, saw his donor base cut in half in June. That's right, just 764,000 donors compared to the 1.5 million who donated to his campaign in April.

The Obama campaign and it's surrogates had proudly projected that Obama would raise $100 million in June and a total of $250 - $300 million prior to the election. But the media failed to focus on the fact that Obama's total was only half of what they projected, primarily due to his shrinking donor base. Interest in the Obama campaign is also shriveling up online, where Obama's website which once ranked near the top 500 according to Alexa Web Tracking, has seen a consistent downward trend in visits since reaching it's pinnacle in early March. Today, Obama's website ranking has dropped to it's lowest level since the first of the year, and ranks around 3,000. The campaign website trend may also be disturbing considering the consistency within McCain's site visits and an upward trend since the beginning of June.

More disturbing for the campaign is the the cash on hand scenario. The McCain campaign and RNC currently have just shy of $100 million in the bank to take their fight forward. Meanwhile the Obama campaign announced yesterday that the campaign and DNC had a total closer to $72 million. This number is troubling for many in the Obama campaign, considering that just one month ago the two groups reported over $35 million of cash on hand. Considering that the DNC and Obama campaign raised $74 Million in June and that the DNC only spent $2 million; that would mean that the Obama campaign burned thru $35 million during the month of June. An astonishing amount considering that the Summer months are typically the doldrums of the campaign season. Even more disconcerting are the polls that continue to show the Obama has failed to increase his support, with his favorability ratings dropping and unfavorable rising.

For their part, Obama bloggers, including Huffpo, Politico, and TPM are reporting false numbers this morning, spreading stories that the DNC and Obama campaign have $92 million in the bank. Their reports are fueled by an LA Times story that simply failed to do any fact-checking. The Obama campaign press release yesterday specifically reported that the combined total cash on hand was $72 million.

One additional aspect of Obama's fundraising numbers is the Hillary effect. Since suspending her campaign in early June, Clinton has participated in several fundraisers and publicly pushed her largest contributors to donate to Obama's campaign. Following one recent fundraising event with Clinton, the Obama campaign reported that they had raised $5 million during the private event. Considering that many, but not all, of Clinton's donors have made contributions to Obama's campaign it's pretty safe to assume that 15%-30% of his fundraising total were derived directly from former Clinton supporters.

Further concerns may surface for the Obama campaign considering that many of the 130,000 donors who funded 60% of his primary campaign have already maxed out their general election contribution. Recent contribution requests reflect this growing desperation for new cash. The Obama campaign once proudly asked for a $5 contribution in their fundraising efforts; today, the campaign has increased their requests to $25.

There is an increasing consensus that Obama will have too dramatically outspend John McCain in order to win the general election; but the question remains, how much will they have to spend? It is unimaginable that the Obama campaign burned through $35 million dollars in the month of June and the best they could do was to 'barely hold on'. Last fall, the DNC requested that donors contribute to individual campaigns rather than the 'move on' type 527's that played such an important role during the last presidential cycle. As a result, DNC cash on hand and 527 groups are lagging far behind the RNC and Republican 527's. If Obama hopes to maintain his efforts to 'buy an election' he is going to have to find a way to reach back out to the small donors to fund his campaign. This may prove more elusive than ever considering that middle class and lower class citizens are being hammered by increasing inflation, record gas prices, and an impending high cost to heat their homes this fall. Perhaps Obama should consider using his new influence to push congress to bring the "The Gas Price Reduction Bill" to a vote and send a message that he actually cares about the middle and lower classes.

"the media failed to look", "the media failed to focus"

The "media" continues it's downhill spiral into irrelevancy. They don't "look" because they don't want to "see". MSM is firmly in the Big O camp and has been from the beginning.

I actually think that over-inflating the numbers is just fine. Times ARE rough for people - they read that BO is rolling in money, they feel no need to help out. When he sends constant begging requests, he looks like even more of a jerk.

I'm sure BO counted heavily on ALL the Clinton supporters just falling into line as ordered - "Get over it", and that's not happening, nor is he "gaining" support they way he was before his true face became apparent. I'm curious - is it going to be possible for him to "flip" back into the public financing if he can't get enough cash? At the rate he is spending he will have to spend at least 50% of his campaign time at fund raising events, that's going to be real work - something he's not fond of. The stress will show quickly.

There is a real problem with egomania - pretty soon you believe all your press. Barack Obama has become THE Obama - complete with world "tour" ala THE Beatles, THE Stones and THE Pope.

Reality is suspended.

I have the same question as Kibby. Can Obama flop back into public financing? And how long does he have to make this decision.
Another questions I have... who has paid for the cost for the DNC to relocate to Chicago? And is there a projected cost to the move.

First point:
The 1.5 million refers to the total amount of individual donors of Obama's entire campaign race. It is unlikely that all the donors will participate on every month.

"The presumptive Democratic nominee has smashed fundraising records this cycle by harnessing the power of the Internet to raise the once unimaginable sum of almost $266 million from more than 1.5 million donors through the end of April."

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/06/20/obama.financing/

Second Point:

The $72 million of the DNC/Obama only includes Obama's total cash on hand. The DNC rose an additional 22.4 million, leading to a total of 92.3 million of cash on hand for both.

"McCain's campaign raised $22 million in June, its best month yet. The campaign said that combined with the Republican National Committee, it has about $95 million cash on hand.

In a fundraising e-mail to supporters, Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe acknowledged the deficit, saying "McCain and the RNC together still have a huge cash advantage, and we need your help to close the gap."

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/17/obama/index.html

If the major news stations are picking this up, it hard to believe that these facts are untrue.

Third Point:

If the average (mean) donation is $68 dollars, there is still much potential for Obama with his existing base. The $5 million dollar event is only one side of the coin. For there to be an average of this number, there must have been a huge amount of small donations.

Please also take these facts into consideration.

I forgot to post post part of the quote for the second point.

"But when Obama's funds are combined with the Democratic National Committee's funds, he has $92 million, meaning he's about on par with McCain."

I have been in corporate America a long time. When accounting numbers are delayed in being reported, as his recent fund-raising were, it is becuase managment is attempting to make the numbers look as good as possible. Cooking the books within the allowances of the law. That takes time. I am absolutely sure that is what happened here. He may have done some fancy footwork, such as counting pledges, something like that. Another possibility is that Soros came through big time, and they want to somehow disguise that fact. But believe me, you don't issue numbers three weeks late if everything is copacetic.

Nnate,

Give me a break, don't try to spin on this site. Go to Obama's website, his campaign release and read the DNC release. The 72 million INCLUDES the 20 million of cash on hand at the DNC. Uh-Oh the facts are undisputable. Nice try!

Great artilce. I also agree with the comments above about the delay in reporting in order to do some fancy footwork.
BTW, who is paying for the Obama tour through Europe and Middle East? Is there taxpayer money involved for secret service, etc.?

One more little tidbit in debunking nnate. The Obama campaign claimed in both March and April to have received donations from over 1.2 million people. In April, 1.5 million. Again, don't try your ridiculous attempt at spin when the campaign's own press releases contradict your statements.

Remember also that B0 made this deal with the DNC in April (way during the primaries) where contributors can now give 28,500 to both. It's those contributors that have been tapped out in June - the NYC fundraiser dinner at the Hyatt had just that tab.
Also, a spokesperson of the campaign told NYT that small donors were just a matter of expediency - because B0 didn't have that much time in the primaries to go to fundraisers.
When comparing the figures to RNC's, one has also to keep into account that they get matching funds. B0 - not so much.
Good article, thanks

NNATE said... "on par with McCain."

After 8 years of GW Bush and so many millions of small donors and an excitement like no other for a historical presidential run....at this point BO is "on par?" WTH? He should be way ahead in campaign cash AND polls and HE IS NOT! Go figure!

Obama will do just fine. There's plenty of HRC supporters like me out there, who have just begun digging into their pocketbook to contribute to Obama now that he's the nominee.

You need to do some fact checking - that may wipe the grin off your face. The 1.5 million is cumulative donors from the primary, not individual donors for the month of April. Senator Obama is getting new donors each month adding to the total number of donors and existing donors who continue to donate are not counted again. Whether you donate $5 once or $2300 in increments, you're still counted as one donor.

The money from the primary can be carried over to the GE and those people that are maxed out for the primary can donate another $2300 for the GE. Along with the new donors Senator Obama's adding each month, the existing donors who continue to donate and the potential of big money from fund-raisers he attends, ($4-$5 million from one fundraiser this month), I don't see Senator Obama having any problems raising money. The sky's the limit, so to speak.

Factchecking?

OK, anon, if 1.5 million was a cumulative total, then how do you explain the 1.2 million they reported in May?

If it was a cumulative total, then does that mean that they refunded, 300,000 donors contributions in May. Gimme a break!

Fact Checking is the one thing that Obama supporters should attempt to do. Stop getting your news for Huffpo and take some time to research it yourself genius.

By the way, Obama's campaign had already banked over 10 million from maxed out contributors for the GE prior to June. It's called a rollover contribution. Again, do your fact checking.

Also, the $5 million dollar fundraiser came from a Hillary Clinton fundraising event in NY. Not even from his own supporters. Again, you are wrong.

Go back to huffpo.

Oops, not so. Clinton's largest donors just met with Carly Fiorina. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/07/16/mccain-surrogate-fiorina-meets-with-clinton-supporters/

Author is in love with his own words. While everything is true, editing could help, this take is too wordy. This is the sin of the internet!

Please don’t pay any attention to the figure of 1.5 million donors. The Obama Campaign has constantly misrepresented and conflated donors with donations. the actual number of donors is somewhere around 300,000. Donors who have met the itemization threshold of $200 with one or more donations are reported to the FEC. This FEC number include the same person many times more for additional DONATIONS. Of the remainder of those small donors he keeps harping about, they will not properly account for the difference between individual contributions and gross receipts. Check out the FEC website, under individual contributions, not the election map. http://www.fec.gov. The figures usually are reported on the 20th.

Here's how I see it.
Obama reported 40 million cash on hand as per yahoo. Not 35 million.

40 million cash on hand
20 million DNC money
He only raised 14 million.
5 million was from Hillary donors
on the breakfast fundraiser.
Obama actually raised only 9 million from his own donors. That was before they closed their wallets after July 4th

Now take away the 35 million burn rate for June
and he is down to 39 million cash on hand.

This based on him SAYIN' he had 40mm cash on hand. We all know he lies constantly. Reality is not part of his agenda.
If he really did have only 35 million cash on hand and not 40 million as reported by yahoo..then he now has 34 million cash on hand.
He'll be broke by convention time.
3 million for investco field..with no bells or whistles.
