Obama's New Campaign Strategy: Control Media Access & Manipulate Public Perception

According to the New York Times, the Obama campaign is tightening 'control of image and access' over the past few weeks in a clear attempt of prevent manipulate media coverage. On Monday in a meeting with African-American Civic the Obama campaign barred cameras from the meeting and recently refused to release the names of a group of religious figures Obama met with. According to the times report, the campaign went as far as providing a separate entrance to protect the identity and prevent press interviews of those in attendance. The new strategy has also resulted in this week's "head scarves" incident which has outraged much of the Muslim community; especially in light of the Obama's recent Jerusalem gaffe.

Yesterday, however, was a different story when Obama invited the press to snap as many pictures as they wanted of him with his newly minted National Security Team. A national security team made up of the "old, established, experienced" guard of the Democratic Party.

Obama and some press point to past campaigns whereas other candidates have also limited access to the candidate. But, wasn't Obama supposed to be the anti-candidate, claiming he wasn't the "quintessential politician" and calling for OPENNESS, TRANSPARENCY and HONESTY in government?

The Obama campaign has gone so far in their manipulation of the media that just yesterday reports surfaced that the Obama campaign was working diligently on the "Michelle Obama" edition of extreme makeover. Again, an understandable move, but one clearly made to manipulate the public perception of Obama, rather than allowing the American People to form their own opinion.

Obamas campaign strategists have defended the moves claiming that they believe they need to take extra steps to "prevent against attack". In reality, the measures are aimed at manipulating public perception.

The Times report was complimentary to the McCain campaigns stating "they still enjoy a reputation for giving reporters traveling with him an unusual amount of access." Again, a laughable irony considering that Obama expects the American people to view McCain as the typical politician in attempt to manipulate his 30 year record of bipartisanship.

The Obama campaign's new tactics are reminiscent of those used by the "propaganda ministries" of leaders of the past and those utilized by some of the most notorious "leaders" of today. The Obama campaign has become so afraid of Obama's gaffes, associations, and hypocritical statements that they now believe that Americans need to be told what issues and information are important and can be discussed. Sshhhh... Did anyone else just hear that crack in the foundation?

Maybe when the media shows it can handle images responsibly, it can get to eat at that trough again. Feeling sorry you didn't get a chance to look for a slanderous, terrorist angle with all of the religious people he met with? Cry more, media.

Anon, that is the most ignorant comment I have ever seen, it sounds like the very reasoning that Chavez used a year ago when he shut down independent television and radio in Ven. Geesh, Anything to keep the "messiah" from being questioned.

Steve, anon's comment sounds more vengeful (for posts such as this one) than ignorant.

The sad fact is that major democratic general elections are won more with plain appearances and publicility than with anything to do with real political issues.

Concidering some recent reported news, you too must agree that big media needs to be handled with much caution.

I must start by saying “I am proud to be an American.” But I must add some words to this statement. I am proud to be an American that thinks for himself. I am a 56 year old that has noticed a trend in America over the past years of people letting the media tell them what to think. If this country is to stay strong and prosper it is up to us all to do our part in finding the truth on the issues of this great nation. From my own research on this election I can see America grow or fall by our choice. If you are an American that thinks for yourself, I don’t have to tell you which candidate is which. I see this election opening many eyes in this country on the need for self thinking. Especially with the neglect of asking the questions that should be asked and researched on both sides. This is causing me to see and hear REAL PEOPLE talk with each other over the coverage of this election. This is going to be a real wakeup call in America and help this country prosper. For the ones out for their own personal selfish gains, I see a rude awakening coming! This election should be on what is best for our country and the future of our children and grandchildren.
