London, England - Save The Children U.K. released an investigative report detailing widespread sexual abuse of children in Sudan, Haiti, and the Ivory Coast. The report details acts of predatory abuse by UN Peacekeepers and Aid Workers against children as young as 6 years old.
The report based upon field research and confidential interviews found that more than half of the nearly 250 children interviewed in these nations had direct knowledge at least 10 acts of sexual abuse being perpetrated.
Detailed in the report were incidents of UN representatives denying food aid unless children granted sexual favors; exchanging food, money, cell phones, and even soap for sex; reports of children being physically forced to have sex (in the US we call that rape); and reports of children forced to participate in acts of child pornography.
The report also found, that in these third-world countries the children rarely came forward to report the abuse due to fear, the threat of retaliation, and the stigma attached to sexual abuse.
The most fearful aspect of this report, however, is that the report is based upon research in only a few locations. Today, UN Peacekeepers and Aid Workers are present in third-world nations, war ravaged nations, and disaster-stricken nations around the world.
The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon assured reporters that he was “deeply concerned” adding that the UN “on all these cases, which have been raised, we will very carefully investigate and whenever there is necessary matters we will take necessary measures from this.”
But the reality is that there have been reported cases of abuse in recent years in Haiti, Liberia, The Ivory Coast, and the Democratic Republic Of Congo. A UN spokeswoman today highlighted the efforts of the UN in responding to past allegations through establishing conduct and discipline units in all U.N. missions. She also alluded to the need for the United Nations to strengthen its investigative capacity.
NOW MY OPINION
The United Nations is a complete bureaucratic nightmare. This organization, that is in a large part funded by the US taxpayer, has abrogated its primary responsibility to enforce and uphold international laws and treaties, has been involved in repeated and ongoing corruption, and has apparently now become the preferred haven for sexual predators.
How widespread is the UN abuse problem?
Consider this: Last year the United Nations removed 100 Sri Lankan Peacekeepers in Haiti after reports of sexual abuse perpetrated against women and children. Now consider the scope of UN aid and peacekeeping operations on a global scale.
Why is the UN a safe haven for predators? Simple, the UN has no authority to punish the peacekeepers for any violation of international or local laws. The only ramification for the predators is if their home nation decides to prosecute.
So What is the UN going to do? Simple, they will investigate it, because that is the only thing that they ever do.
This is an organization that has essentially done nothing to stop the Genocide in Darfur and throughout regions of Africa; They have yet to deal with Somalia, Syria, Hezbollah, Al-Quaeda, Hamas, Myanmar, North Korea, Venezuelan territorial violations in Guyana and support of terrorism in Columbia; and in 6 years just now concluded that Iran is Not Cooperative. Instead the United Nations in their great wisdom have determined that the best use of their resources and collective efforts for global security would best be met by launching an inquiry into race relations in the US. A nation that last time I checked had a viable African-American running for President.
The United Nations has repeatedly failed to fulfill the basic obligations outlined in its charter and in my view has now crossed the line from which our nation and the other nations of world that our not morally bankrupt should seek a new alternative and stop funding this corrupt and impotent organization.
